Shelling adventure to North Captiva helps raise funds for Shell Museum

By Staff | Oct 4, 2010

Don’t miss the boat! Join Adventures In Paradise and Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum director/curator Dr. José H. Leal for a shelling adventure to North Captiva.

On Nov. 6, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum and Adventures In Paradise are teaming up to sponsor a shelling trip to North Captiva Island. All proceeds from the trip will be donated to the Shell Museum.

The trip will be led by the area’s leading shell expert, Dr. José H. Leal, director/curator for the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. Dr. Leal will assist with shell identification as well as lead a discussion on mollusks and the environment. Adventures In Paradise will donate all event proceeds to the museum.

The trip will depart from Port Sanibel Marina at 9 a.m. Participants will board a 45-foot powered catamaran and enjoy a beautiful one-hour cruise through the intracoastal waterway to North Captiva beaches accessible only by boat or plane, where they will watch dolphins at play and shell along pristine breaches that only few have the opportunity to experience.

After the shelling adventure, the boat will stop for lunch at Barnacle Phil’s, located on North Captiva Island. Their menu features Caribbean island favorites including seafood chowder, black beans and yellow rice, and jerk-style fresh fish and chicken. The group will return to port at about 3 p.m.

“It was a great trip despite the chill in the air. I didn’t find many shells that day but that didn’t really matter because we enjoyed the group of people, lunch was great, and we learned so much for Dr. Leal,” reported Connie Mara. She and her husband, Gerald, attended this trip last year.

“We appreciate the generosity of Adventures In Paradise,” said Leal. “Without the support of the local business community, the mission of the museum could not be carried out.

“Dedicated community business leaders — such as Evelyn Stewart — have provided both the service and financial support necessary for the Shell Museum to reach a milestone 15-year anniversary on Nov. 18,” Leal added.

Tickets are $65 for non-museum members and $55 for museum members. Lunch is not included in the price of the tickets. To make a reservation for this special outing, call Adventures In Paradise at 472-8443. You may also visit www.adventuresinparadiseinc.com.
