Cracker Fest fundraiser for START coming Nov. 5
The Sanibel-Captiva START (Solutions To Avoid Red Tide, Inc.) chapter is hosting the Second Annual San-Cap Cracker Fest at The Bait Box on Friday, Nov. 5 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
This event is a departure from traditional Sanibel functions; it’s a celebration of Sanibel’s rich and lively heritage, with a wonderful Florida "Cracker" dinner and silent and live auctions. The evening will be elegantly casual, filled with down-home music by local favorites, The Troublestarters. Dinner will include smoked piney woods rooter and fried mullet with all the trimmings, plus mouth-watering desserts. Select wine and beer will also be on hand.
The Sanibel-Captiva chapter of START is part of a statewide organization headquartered in Sarasota, Fla. Visit the website at www.start1.com for additional details.
START’s vision is to improve the quality of our marine waters through research, public education and programs that restore marine habitats, preserve marine species and promote healthy beaches and coastal waterways. This vision has never been more important.
When local START members decided to have a fundraiser last year, they wanted to keep the majority of the proceeds in Lee County, and have succeeded in that mission. Chapter President Dr. Bruce Neill, Executive Director of the Sanibel Sea School, spearheaded collaborative efforts between START and the Sanibel Sea School to create a tool to educate Lee County teachers and students about local coastal and marine issues. This tool is called The Coastal Classroom, a computer module prototype designed specifically for seventh graders.
This project could not have been produced without the generous help of last year’s sponsors, donors and event participants. A presentation of The Coastal Classroom will be made at this year’s Cracker Fest.
The objective for the coming year is to develop other outreach programs to be underwritten, with proceeds from San-Cap Cracker Fest 2010. Tickets are $75 per person and are available by presale only and limited to the first 300 RSVP guests. A sold-out crowd is anticipated again this year, so make yor reservations early.
Send your check to San-Cap START, P.O. Box 1511, Sanibel, FL 33957.
