Captiva dancer shoots for world championship
Susan Scott’s voice vibrated with excitement.
The Captiva resident could not contain the joy of knowing that by the end of the week she might become the next world dancing champion.
After winning Top Female Bronze in Las Vegas this past April, Scott and dancing partner Steve Wilkie are going to compete in the World Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Wilkie is the owner of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Fort Myers.
During the competition Scott will be performing 11 rhythm and five smooth style dances. Wilkie has added eight international dances to her repertoire. “To say the least, I have been training hard since May with Steve and numerous other coaches,” Scott said in an email. “At this competition I will be on the dance floor over 250 times. To add to the excitement and drama Steve is dancing ‘full out’ with torn knee ligaments and will require surgery upon our return. I am counting on him to continue to coach me from a sitting position until he’s ready for our next competition.”
Scott delighted in her win this past April in Las Vegas where she got her first chance to strut her dancing stuff.
Scott won the Top Female Bronze award in the Fred Astaire Cross Country Dance Sport Competitions. She competed in Las Vegas with Wilkie, who likened the competition to the popular television show “Dancing with the Stars.”
Scott — who started dancing six months ago in the Sanibel Community House’s “Dancing with the Island Stars” event — will announce how she fared in the competition when she returns.
“No matter what the outcome in Puerto Rico, I know I have the dancing fever. My hope is to bring a big trophy back to Captiva.”
