Medicine from your flower garden

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine yourself deep in a luxurious flower garden. Blooms are everywhere. Intoxicating aromas and color assault your senses. You feel deep at peace. You wander down this path and that path. Each bend in the trail brings a new feeling of emotional harmony. Your fears are fading. You no longer feel uncertain or lonely. Feelings of despair are a distant memory. The cares of the world are lifted from your shoulders.

This image is not your imagination. According to Dr. Edward Bach, physician in the early part of the last century, illness is the external expression of negative emotional states. He abandoned a lucrative medical practice in London to find a new system of healing involving plant remedies. He found remedies in the lanes and fields around London in a variety of plants and flowers. His life followed a seasonal pattern: Spring and Summer were spent looking for and preparing remedies. Fall and Winter were spent giving help and advice. He found that by treating the personalities and feelings of patients, their illnesses often went away.

Some of the plants and their uses follow:

Rock rose: Helps when you experience fear such as terror or fright that makes you feel frozen and unable to move or think clearly.

Cherry plum: For those who fear losing control of their thoughts and actions and doing things they know are bad or wrong.

Aspen: Helps when you feel fearful without knowing why.

Hornbeam: Helps when you feel that you that you lack sufficient strength mentally or physically to carry the burden of life.

Gentian: Helps when you get discouraged and depressed when things or wrong.

Clematis: For those who find their lives unhappy and withdraw into a fantasy world.

Honeysuckle: Helps you let go of past experiences or events.

Olive: Helps you regain energy, vitality and interest in life.

I have been using a few drops of Star of Bethlehem for the past few days, a remedy to help “soften the impact of shock, grief or fright.” Do I feel less shocked, grieved, or frightened? Don’t know yet but life does seem a little less stressful.

One of Bach’s most popular remedies is Rescue Remedy and that really does help diminish anxiety. People use it on cats to help them acclimate to travel stress; others use it to help them (people) sleep. I enjoyed it many years ago to get me through a stressful time.

Flower remedies are interesting, safe, and inexpensive. Or I guess you could go sniffing through your own flower garden.
