HOLISTIC HEALTH NOTEBOOK: They’re at it again – don’t let them win

Early this year, Sen. John McCain introduced a bill that would have given the FDA Draconian new powers. The bill was sidelined, thank goodness. Let’s keep an eye on John McCain to make sure he doesn’t try it again.

But now Sen. Henry Waxman (always a staunch enemy of freedom to choose health care options),  has been trying to sneak language into a bill that has already passed the house and hopes to get it into a Senate bill. The bill will give unelected FTC bureaucrats arbitrary authority to impose crippling requirements to drive up the cost of supplements or remove them from the market altogether.

Just to give you an idea of what this means to us, let’s talk fish oil. You can purchase excellent quality fish oil for under $25 for a month supply. As you know, fish oil benefits the entire body: reduces depression, improves heart health, bolsters immune system, and so on. Everyone should take fish oil. But the pharmaceutical industry has come up with their own brand of fish sold under the trade name of Lovaza® selling about $195 for a 30-day supply.

If the Medicare Prescription Drug Act and Health Care Reform Act passes, you will pay outrageously inflated prices for fish oil prescriptions, without the ability to choose a product of equal (or better) quality at a lower price. Oh, you can have your insurance company pick up the tab. That makes it free, doesn’t it? Or will it continue to drive up the cost of insurance, which hurts us all?

In the words of Life Extension: "Pharmaceutical companies now want to erect so many new restrictions over dietary supplements that consumers (and taxpayers) will be forced to pay outlandish prescription drug prices for fish oil and other low-cost nutrients.

"As most of you know, taxes will soon be raised and new government debt created to fund these lavish subsidies to drug companies. It is this kind of institutional corruption that bankrupts governments around the world. We fear that citizen apathy may enable this corrupt legislation to be enacted into law, which will hasten Medicare’s date with insolvency, while saddling consumers with higher dietary supplements prices, if the supplements are available all."

And supplements become unavailable to us all if they are so expensive we can’t afford them.

Henry Waxman and his ilk need to be shut down on the issue of dietary supplements. This is urgent: please contact your legislator today and insist that this language not be added to the Senate version of the Wall Street Reform Act and not be included in any later House or Senate version of bill. Do this today: your health depends on it.
