Celebrating Mother’s Day island style

Moms seem to toil all year long. Many work to keep the household going but most moms put their energies into the task of ensuring their children – young and older – are healthy and happy.

In honor of moms, the Islander has compiled of list of things to do and places to shop on the islands. So if you are scratching your head and wondering how you can repay the woman that has made you who you are today check out these ideas.

Looking to let sails out of Mom’s stessful life for a day?

Captiva Cruises on Captiva is featuring a Mother’s Day special to Cabbage Key. Mom gets to go for free with a ticketed passenger. The cruise is from 10 – 3 p.m. There visitors can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of Cabbage Key and have lunch at the Jimmy Buffet style eatery the Cabbage Key Inn. “It’s a day for mom to relax,” said Diane Etter, a Captiva Cruises staff member.

Looking for a bit of a workout with Mom?

The Tarpon Bay Explorers is featuring several different nature tours by cruise or kayak on Mother’s Day.

The Kayak Trail tour is at 10 a.m. and the nature and sea life tour is at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. There is an evening cruise from 6 to 8 p.m. And tram tours through Wildlife Drive  is at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“I think its a good way to spend some quality time with your family,” said Brie Coffman, a tour guide with the Tarpon Bay Explorers.

And for those looking a for a cute, sweet and oh so timely reminder of your love for Mom Amy’s Something Special carries a line of soft, vibrant-hued jelly watches. The watches made popular by Sandra Bullock who wore one in the movie “Blind Side”cost $38. They come in 10 different colors.

“Anybody can wear them. They have just been really popular,” said Amy Horton, owner of Amy’s Something Special.

And if you are still sighing as what to do on Mother’s Day pick up some of your mom’s favorite snacks, make a picnic basket and head to one of the island’s pristine beaches. For a bit of pampering try a mother/daughter pedicure at one of the island’s spas. Or head out to one of the many cozy eateries on the islands. For something sweet and special the Over Easy Cafe on Sanibel serves up Mimosas.
