LCEC responds to recent power outages on Sanibel

By Staff | Apr 30, 2010

On Friday, the City of Sanibel received the following information from LCEC (Lee County Electric Cooperative) regarding the recent Sanibel power outages.

On the evening of April 29 and early morning of April 30, two large outages occurred on Sanibel Island.

The first outage began at 7:37 p.m. A lightning arrestor failed at a switch station a few spans to the west of Rabbit Road on Sanibel-Captiva Road. When the arrestor failed, it shorted to ground burning down one phase at that location. LCEC speculates the cause for the lightning arrestor was damage from the storm earlier this week.

The second outage was catastrophic failure of a breaker switch in the substation. This interrupted service to 5,212 customers on Sanibel beginning at 0:57 a.m. Power was restored to all affected customers in less than ninety (90) minutes.

Sanibel residents with questions regarding power outages should call LCEC directly at 239-656-2300.
