Property owners entitled to free post office box

By Staff | Mar 18, 2010

Captiva postmaster Trina Stokes takes a birthday card that Mike Boris is sending to his daughter.

If you’re a property owner on Captiva, the Captiva Island Post Office wants you to know that you’re entitled to a free post office box – even if you only stay on the island for a short period of time each year.

“Since there’s no mail delivery on Captiva Island, each street address gets one free p.o. box for the owner of the property,” said Captiva post master Trina Stokes.

“Some people stay only short time and think that they shouldn’t get a post office box and that they don’t have to have one, but everybody that owns property out here is entitled to a free box. I think people that stay only a month or two think, ‘Oh, why bother,’ but it’s okay,” she continued.

“If their mail is delivered to a street address, it gets returned, so a lot of the time, they don’t know where their mail is. But if I knew that they had a p.o. box, I could get them their mail,” Stokes said.

The Captiva Island Post Office is located at 14814 Captiva Drive.

The lobby is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The lobby is closed between noon and 2 p.m, but post office box access is available at all times.
