Carnell to discuss Slipper Orchids at Orchid Society gathering

By Staff | Mar 11, 2010

“Slipper Orchids” will be the topic of the Monday, March 15 meeting of the Sanibel Captiva Orchid Society. Mickey Carnell, co-owner of Blue Pagoda and Evolution Orchids in Englewood, will present the meeting about paphiopedilum orchids.

The meeting will be held at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, located at 2304 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Carnell graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in Plant Health Management. While in school, he did an internship where he helped propagate orchids. The internship led him to sell orchid flasks on an eBay store, “Evolution Orchids.”

Mickey did this until May 2003, when he and his partner, Gina Victor, packed up their belongings and headed south to Florida to take over Blue Pagoda. In 2005, the business was awarded “Small Business of the Year” from the local Chamber of Commerce. They now run their business from home and specialize in new and different blooming and non-blooming orchids as well providing special event/wedding flowers.

Novices are encouraged to come to the meeting at 1 p.m. to listen to a member of the Orchid Society discuss the “Fundamentals of Repotting Orchids What do I use? How do I Get It?” Participants are also encouraged to come early to purchase plants or to do so during intermission. Anyone with questions or an “ill orchid” that needs diagnosis can bring their plants to the meeting during show-and-tell. Orchid Society members are invited to participate in a monthly show. Ribbons are awarded for best Hybrid and best Species Orchids. Members and guests are also invited to participate in a monthly raffle.

Society membership is $20 annually, while guests may attend meetings for $4.
