Works by Rauschenberg, Sprankle to be featured at ABC Sale on March 6
The Captiva Civic Association’s 44th annual ABC Sale, to be held at the Sanctuary Golf Club on Saturday, March 6, will feature an auction made up of incredible items, including pieces by two world renowned artists.
“We feel very privileged to have two really fine works of art in this year’s auction,” said Sharon Brace of the CCA.
The first is a sculpture of a pileated woodpecker, handcarved and painted by Sanibel resident and celebrated artist, Jim Sprankle.
“Whoever wins the sculpture in the auction doesn’t have to worry about feeding it or cleaning up after it or keeping it from poking a hole in the side of your house,” Sprankle said with a laugh. “I’m just happy to do it. I have a lot of dear friends up on Captiva and I always enjoy going up there.”
“When Jack Cunningham approached me, I thought, well, how do you say no to a Hoosier?” Sprankle said, noting that he is looking forward to attending the ABC Sale – especially because of the event’s new venue.
The second item up for auction is a print by the late Robert Rauschenberg, a preeminent American artist who spent much of his time on Captiva. Rauschenberg passed away in May of 2008.
“It’s a signed, numbered, framed print and number 50 out of a series of 100. It’s in peerless condition and was donated by an anonymous collector,” Brace said.
The 1979 print called “Most Visible Parts of the Sea,” is a solvent transfer with fabric collage and is 31 by 23 inches.
The ABC Sale will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 6.
“The invitations went out in the mail this week, so we urge people to get their reservations in as soon as possible,” Brace said.
But because the ABC Sale will be held at the Sanctuary this year and there will be more room to accommodate a larger crowd, Brace encourages non-members to call into the office to request invitations.
Tickets are $85.
