Sanibel Congregational UCC congregation,Bat Yam – Temple of the Islands to host Shared Scholar Program
The public is invited to join us Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ (2050 Periwinkle Way) to hear Stephen Mize, archivist for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum discuss the historical significance of the diary of James G. McDonald.
McDonald served as League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the 1930’s, and was the first U.S. Ambassador to Israel. He witnessed many of the defining moments of the 20th century and met with leading figures of the era, including Roosevelt, Truman, Ben-Gurion, Mussolini and many in Hitler’s regime. His diaries eventually filled more than 10,000 pages, and are now part of the Museum collection.
Mize will share key excerpts from the diary, and recount how a combination of detective work and serendipity led to its being donated to the Museum’s collection. There will be no charge for the program and dessert reception to follow. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

Adult education program in February
Everyone is invited to join members of our congregation for a four-week series, exploring a variety of poetry.
This program is designed for those who love poetry, but especially for those who think they don’t! You will rejoice in the skill of these authors, delight in their fresh images, and perhaps become inspired to try writing your own “Expressions of the Spirit.”
We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at Sanibel Congregational UCC (2050 Periwinkle Way) on Wednesdays starting on Feb. 3 and continuing on Feb. 10, 17 and 24 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. We are pleased that Jennifer McLean will be leading this series for the second year.
Please call the church at 472-0497 to reserve a copy of your free resource.
