Environmental restoration project starts on Jan. 4 at Lighthouse Beach
In order to avoid bird and turtle nesting seasons, the City’s Lighthouse Beach Sand Placement Project will begin on Monday, Jan. 4 at the bayside beach of the Lighthouse Beach Park, adjacent to the fishing pier. This project includes the placement of approximately 5,000 cubic yards of sand on the bayside beach.
In order to minimize inconvenience to the public, the project is scheduled to be completed in 20 days. Due to the dangerous nature of the sand placement work, the bayside beach will remain closed for the duration of the project, and the Lighthouse Road from the fishing pier parking lot to the lighthouse will need to be temporarily closed to all traffic during certain construction activities.
The city has contracted with Eastman Aggregate Enterprises, LLC to perform this work at a cost of $175,222.92 (fully funded through a Tourist Development Council grant). Construction hours for this work are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and may include some Saturday hours.
Motorists and pedestrians are requested to use all due care and adhere to the signage and flagger’s instructions. The fishing pier, fishing pier parking lot and gulfside parking lot and beach will remain open during construction.
For additional information or questions regarding this project, please contact the city’s Public Works Department at 472-6397.
