Flag Football League begins seventh season on Sanibel

By Staff | Dec 23, 2009

The Sanibel Flag Football League kicked off its seventh season this month, with 120 kids playing football at the fields. The co-ed age groups are 6 to 8, 9 to 11 and 12 to 14. This league is sanctioned by the NFL, and the kids receive official reversible NFL jerseys from the league.

During the first week, we had six extremely close games, five of which were separated by one touchdown.

In the youngest division, the Giants edged the Chargers 12-6 with Sean Shackford making two key interceptions, and the Dolphins squeaked by the Steelers 12-7 with Carson Towle scoring the winning touchdown.

In the middle division, the Raiders beat the Browns 12-6 as Vincent Cianciolo returned an interception for a “pick six,” outdoing J.J. Roberts opening play running touchdown, and the Rams took care of the Cardinals 8-6 with a game-ending touchback.

In the older division, the Panthers beat the Cowboys 13-6 with a length of the field bomb thrown by Josh Olsen. The Bengals stopped the Titans 19-6 with a touchdown pass thrown from Laura Chenciner to Darby Pfeifer.

The second set of games started on Thursday, Dec. 17 but the games were stopped due to a Luminary-type downpour and lightning at the fields. Please come out and cheer on your favorite team on Thursday, Jan. 7 as the season resumes en route to our Super Bowl in February.
