Dog Club to discuss potential place for park

By Staff | Nov 30, 2009

The Sanibel Dog Club, Inc. announced this week that they will be conducting an open meeting to discuss a possible new site to construct a dog park on the island.

The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanibel Community House, located at 2173 Periwinkle Way, is designed to gauge interest for a dog park among its current members and potential new members, said Jason Lamanna, an officer of the Sanibel Dog Club.

“We’re trying to get as many people as we can who are interested in the dog park and club,” Lamanna said.

During the meeting, there will be a full presentation about the possible but not-yet-disclosed new location. Last year, residents voted against the Dog Club establishing a park on city-owned property along Island Inn Road. The land, though no longer environmentally-protected, had at one time been considered sensitive, so some residents balked at the idea of putting a dog park in that location, Lamanna noted.

The idea for the dog park was narrowly defeated by only 41 votes.

“There’s a lot of people who who want the dog park,” Lamanna said.

The new land being looked at will not require a referendum – just support, Lamanna explained, since the land is owned privately.

However, finding a suitable parcel for a dog park has not been easy.

“We don’t have a lot of open land that isn?t environmentally-protected,”? Lamanna

Currently, there are 110 members who belong to The Sanibel Dog Club. Anyone interested in attending the meeting is welcome to bring someone. There will be hors d’oeuvres served. Dog Club members are especially encouraged to attend.

“Commitment from people who want a dog park is key to making it happen,” Lamanna added.
