Billy and Salli Kirkland make major donation to Trails In Motion Fund

By Staff | Nov 16, 2009

Last Saturday was a big day for Sanibel’s Shared Use Path System. Billy and Salli Kirkland, owners of Billy’s Rentals and Billy’s Bike Shop on Sanibel, contributed $5,000 to the Trails In Motion, a 501 (c) (3) fund dedicated to raising private donations to help support Sanibel’s shared use paths.

The Kirklands’ contribution was one of the largest donations to the Trails In Motion Fund since it was started in 2005. Bill Sartoris, President of the Sanibel Bicycle Club, received the contribution on behalf of the Trails in Motion Fund.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of our business on the Island, and in those 10 years we have come to appreciate the tremendous asset Sanibel has in its path system,” said Billy Kirkland. “Our shared use paths are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike and are an important part of the transportation picture in Sanibel. Salli and I are proud to be able to give back to the community by helping support the paths through the Trails In Motion Fund.”

In addition, Kirkland said that monies raised at his 10th Anniversary Party last August helped to make the donation possible.

The Trails in Motion Fund was begun in August 2005, and its mission is to serve as a mechanism for raising private funds to support projects that enhance the safety and quality of the shared use paths on Sanibel. For example, the Trails In Motion Fund provided support to the City of Sanibel to help underwrite the cost of developing Sanibel’s Shared Use Path Master Plan, adopted by the City in April of 2009.

The Trails In Motion Fund was set up by the Sanibel Bicycle Club, whose members also provided the Fund’s initial financial support with their private donations. Trails In Motion Fund is part of the Good Neighbor Community Foundation of Sanibel-Captiva, which is administered by the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.

“We have already seen the positive things that can be accomplished for the Sanibel’s path system by the Trails In Motion Fund, but there is a lot more to do,” said Sartoris. “Billy and Sally Kirkland’s generous contribution to the Fund will be a huge help, and I hope it serves as an example to others.”
