Local sailors finish Junior Olympic sailing regatta
Competition concluded this past Sunday in the United States Junior Olympic River Romp Regatta in the Caloosahatchee River, with seven local sailors earning medals in their respective racing fleets.
The 21 Lee County sailors joined more than 260 others from around Florida and the nation in the two-day Junior Olympic competition sanctioned by the United States Sailing Association. The competition took place in the Caloosahatchee River between the Caloosahatchee and Midpoint bridges. Sailors launched from the beach in North Fort Myers.
Sailors ranging in age from 7 to 18 competed in International Optimist, Sunfish, Club 420, O’Pen BIC and Laser classes. The River Romp Regatta is the second largest youth regatta in Florida and one of 22 Junior Olympic sanctioned events for the 2009-10 sailing season.
Winners in each fleet were:

Optimist Blue: Wade Waddell, Lauderdale Yacht Club/Palm Beach Sailing Club

Laser 4.7: Sodnie Naughton, Pleon Yacht Club
Laser Radial: Michael Zonnenberg, Davis Island Yacht Club

O’Pen BIC: Geronimo Nores, Miami Yacht Club
Sunfish: Lynsey Randolph, Edison Sailing Center

The regatta was hosted by the Edison Sailing Center and supported by the Lee County Sports Authority and Lee County Parks and Recreation, which is the coordinator of the Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival that launches this Friday, Oct. 23.
