City-run vs. privately-operated

By Staff | Oct 15, 2009

To the editor,

We have our own prime example of the effects of public options to commercial enterprise.

The city-run Sanibel Recreation Center is a terrific facility, many options for fitness and recreation. Very reasonable cost. The Sanibel Fitness Center was a privately-operated and popular “health club” that could not compete with the “public option.”

Any speculation that a public option will encourage competition and lower prices is hooey.

Oh, by the way – the cost to use the Sanibel Recreation Center has gone up.
