San-Cap Orchid Society to meet Oct. 19

By Staff | Oct 5, 2009

“Oncidiums” will be the main topic of the Monday, Oct. 19 meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Orchid Society.

The program will be presented by Bill Hill, of Orchid Island Orchids in Vero Beach, Fla., a grower with 40 years experience specializing in oncidium culture.

The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, located at 2304 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel. This will be the Society’s first meeting of the 2009-10 season

Orchid novices are encouraged to come to the meeting at 1 p.m. to hear a member of the San-Cap Orchid Society demonstrate the capabilities of the computer program “Orchid Wiz,” a tool for identifying an orchid’s parentage.

Participants can come early to purchase orchids or to do so during intermission. Anyone with questions or an “ill orchid” that needs diagnosis can bring their plants to the meeting during Show-and-Tell. Orchid Society members are invited to participate in a monthly show. Ribbons are awarded for best Hybrid and best Species Orchids. Members and guests are also invited to participate in a monthly orchid raffle.

Society membership is $20 annually, guests are $4 per meeting. For additional details, contact Nannette Lehr at 395-3327.
