FISH needs donations to help residents

By Staff | Sep 25, 2009

Marilyn is a 42-year-old single mother of three small children living and working on island for over five years. Her husband, who was self-employed, died in a motor vehicle accident nine months ago. Two months ago her work hours were cut from 40 hours to 25 hours. With no family to help she is struggling to pay rent and put food on the table. Who will help?

Dick is an island senior who has lived and worked on Sanibel for over 25 years. His daughter, Ellen, was laid-off from work six months ago and has been unable to find work locally. Ellen and her two young children moved in with him. Ellen continues to seek work, and she is also taking courses to become a nurse so she can better support her children. With limited funds it is difficult to keep up monthly expenses and pay for groceries. Who will help?

The economy is growing tougher and people everywhere, including many of our islands neighbors, are struggling. The “season” will not begin for another few months yet our local families need to feed their families. Who will help?

F.I.S.H. of Sanibel’s Food Pantry is dedicated to assisting these families during these difficult times. The Pantry is able to offer non-perishable and perishable foods to those in need on Sanibel and Captiva. The food pantry is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well as Wednesday until 5 p.m.

During season, donations of non-perishable items are received from many of our friends. However during this time of year donations dwindle and the pantry is very low on supplies. Each week FISH purchases fresh milk, juice, eggs and meat with the donations collected from our generous donors. However, additional items are needed for the pantry, such as tuna fish, canned fruit, juice packs, pasta and sauce, paper towels, soap, and detergent.

F.I.S.H. appreciates the support of all island donors. Anyone wishing to donate to the food pantry is welcome to call FISH at 472-4775 or stop by the Walk-In-Center, which is located at 1630 Periwinkle Way, Suite B. Your generosity is greatly appreciated by all those we serve, both young and old!
