Island youngsters invited to enter scary poetry contest and win tickets

By Staff | Sep 16, 2009

To celebrate Halloween, kids and monsters of all ages are invited to enter BIG ARTS Halloween haiku and poem contest. To enter, submit a Halloween-themed haiku or poem to BIG ARTS by Thursday, Oct. 8.

Entries may be e-mailed to cpaus@BIGARTS.org, or submitted via BIG ARTS Facebook page, or dropped off to BIG ARTS at 900 Dunlop Road. Entries must include name, age and phone number. The winner will be selected randomly from all entries, and announced on Friday, Oct. 16.

The winner will be notified by phone, and will receive two tickets to the “Little Monster Tales” performance at BIG ARTS on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.

“Little Monster Tales” is a show with juggling, comedy, puppets, and music. Fantasy Theatre Factory tells spine-tingling stories that are sure to send children running to the library for books that contain these tales. Kids can come in their Halloween costume to enjoy the performance.

Shiver hilariously with Fantasy Theatre Factory’s comic version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The anti-drug message is funny but clear. Shake with The Monster and the Tailor by Paul Galdone where a brave tailor sews pants for the king in a haunted graveyard and is chased by a monster. Tremble at The Ghost Eye Tree by Bill Martin and John Archambault as a child conquers fear of the night. Scream with laughter as Ghostwriter decides to help a young student with a homework assignment. Cringe with delight over Scary Poems for Rotten Kids by Sean O’Huigin. The show is recommended for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The stories can be enjoyed again if kids later seek out the books by the same authors.

Tickets to see “Little Monster Tales” are $12 for adults, $7 for children under age 13.

Fantasy Theatre Factory is a touring children’s theatre company based in Miami, Fla. They are professional adult performers who provide quality cultural programming for children and family audiences.
