Rotary to take part in MDA telethon

By Staff | Sep 5, 2009

The Rotary Club of Cape Coral North will be manning the phones yet again during this year’s Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon.
Filmed at the communication center of Florida Gulf Coast University, local fund-raising efforts will be taking place simultaneously during the day long nationwide telecast.
Rotary Club of Cape Coral North member Phyllis J. Shelton, said the club has participated in the fund raiser for many years.
Though she has two nephews with the disease, she said it’s not the driving force behind her involvement.
“I have two nephews with muscular dystrophy but that’s not the reason,” she said. “Rotary supports different ideas and different projects.”
The club will have 16 phones going during the fund-raising efforts.
Eight club members will answer phones live on television, while eight to nine students will answer phones at Ida Baker High School as part of the Rotary Club’s Interact club.
“We actually go and sit at the phone bank and work on live television,” she added. “We do it at the same as the national telethon.”
The Rotary Club of Cape Coral North meets Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Southside Grill on Del Prado Boulevard
