Captiva Cruises, in conjunction with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, is currently accepting applications for individuals seeking to train as volunteer docents to provide meaningful narrative for passengers aboard its vessels during designated cruises and tours.

The six-week training program will run from Tuesday, Oct. 13, then every Monday through Nov. 16. Trainees will learn from leading local experts on island ecology, natural history, marine science and wildlife. Trainees will be provided with extensive reading and reference materials and are expected to be diligent in their studies.

Docent applicants must have a sincere commitment to conservation, enjoy learning, enjoy being on the water and have superb public speaking and interpersonal skills and a pleasant speaking voice. They must attend all training sessions and pass all written and verbal tests with a high level of accuracy. Trainees should also be able to maintain balance on a moving ship, stand for one to two hour periods and function in weather from 40 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Docents will be supervised by a designated staff member. Close supervision and training will occur initially during the trial period. Once trainees pass all the requirements, they will become natural history docents, who will lead tours educating visitors to and residents of Southwest Florida. The docent will be expected to attend continuing education classes and stay apprised of pertinent environmental issues.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are interested in learning about island wildlife and habitat and sharing that knowledge with others.
