Hurricane Committee solidifies plans for 2009 storm season

The Captiva Hurricane Preparation and Response Committee met last week to review the organization’s planning efforts for the 2009 hurricane season.

“We want to encourage people to get their hang tags and in their home owner’s letters,” said committee member Doris Holzheimer.

“I’m kind of disturbed that only 120 people have gotten their tags,” Holzheimer said, noting that even though only one tag can be issued per household, 120 is still a very low number.

“I’m much more concerned with apathy than with where people get their information,” Holzheimer said, noting that she encourages Captivans to attend the City of Sanibel’s second hurricane seminar on Thursday, Aug. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. at BIG ARTS, located at 900 Dunlop Road.

According to Holzheimer, the committee’s recently updated Web site www.MyCaptiva.info, is also an excellent source for preparation information.

“It’s a great resource,” she said.

Active links to information regarding preparation and securing hang tags and homeowner’s letters are all available on the committee’s Web site.

The group also discussed additional training for the Structural Safety Inspection team. Anyone who is interested in becoming a part of the SSI team can call the Captiva Island Fire Control District at 472-9494.

Holzheimer said that so far, all of the committee’s plans are in place. Now, it’s just a matter of getting residents to plan and be prepared for any potential storms.

The hurricane committee will meet again in October.
