CCA prepares to host 43rd annual ABC Sale

By Staff | Mar 5, 2009

The Captiva Civic Association’s annual ABC Sale is slated for Saturday, March 14, and this year’s auction list is filled with brand new items in addition to packages that have become traditional favorites.

One of the package items up for auction is a two-person kayak with two individual high back seats and two paddles, in addition to a one-hour windsurfing lesson, a one-hour kite boarding lesson and a full day of paddle boarding, all with your choice of location at the Sanibel Causeway or on your Captiva beach.

This package was donated by Trevor Nette and Mike McMurray of McMurray and Nette VIP Realty and Roy Massey of Ace Performer.

Local artist and island favorite Lauri Kailahnen, whose work you’ve seen on the Captiva Post Office mailbox, has also donated an orginal painting.

CCA member Mark Wells will be carving bird house in the form of a miniature replica of The Bubble Room. In the past years, Wells designed a birdhouse replica of the Island Store and the Chapel-by-the-Sea.

Also up for grabs is a private boat trip to Useppa with lunch for six, donated by CCA members Jay and Cindy Brown.

A three-and-a-half hour fish house tour for eight in Pine Island Sound, to take place on Tuesday, March 24 at 1 p.m., narrated by the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s education director Kristie Anders will also be auctioned.

Some old favorites returning that will return to the auction block are a 30-minute fire truck tour of Captiva for four people thanks to the Captiva Island Fire Control District and a 45-minute biplane aerial tour of Captiva donated by CCA members through Classic Air Ventures.

The popular restaurant package, including two free cakes from The Bubble Room and six New England lobsters, will feature coupons for various local restaurants.

“The restaurant package also includes a Ruby Tuesday gift certificate for $100, good anywhere there is a Ruby Tuesday [and] several pounds of Dunkin Donuts coffee and free coffee cards,” said ABC Sale chairperson Sue Sherlock.

The 43rd annual sale will also feature four special bookcases decorated exclusively by local artists. Event chairman and artist Sue Sherlock will decorate one and the Crafty Ladies of Sunset Captiva, Jan Markle and Kym Nadar will all be auctioning off their specially designed items.

These special items have been a feature of the sale for six years, beginning with hand-painted serving trays and continuing with hand-painted Adirondack chairs, small side tables, totem poles and last year’s storage chests.

One of the sale’s most unique items is a needlepoint rug that was designed and stitched by Captivans almost 25 years ago and raffled off to support the CCA’s scholarship fund in 1985.

The three-foot-by-four-foot pale green rug features the state bird, the mockingbird, surrounded by large apricot colored hibiscus and was donated to the CCA by the family that won it all those years ago.

The ABC Sale will begin on Saturday, March 14 at 6 p.m. If you have any questions regarding the event or the items that will be auctioned, contact the CCA at 472-2111.
