Hurricane Preparedness Seminar coming March 6

By Staff | Feb 26, 2009

Next Friday at 1:30 p.m., the Hurricane Preparation and Response Committee and the Captiva Island Fire Control District will present a hurricane preparedness seminar in the Captiva Civic Association meeting room, located at 11560 Chapin Lane.

Though the seminar’s agenda is not quite full yet, Doris Holzheimer, a member of the Hurricane Preparation and Response Committee, said that Terry Kelley from the Lee County Emergency Operations Center, Stephanie Dowd from the Sanibel Police Department, a representative from the State Insurance Office, committee members from the structural safety inspection crew and WINK chief meteorologist Jim Farrell will all be speaking at the event.

If you visit the Hurricane Committee’s Web site, located at www.mycaptiva.info , you’ll notice a link asking residents to participate in a survey. This survey helps the committee determine how Captivans will best benefit from the preparative and informative work the committee does.

“The Hurricane Committee asks you to go onto our Web site, fill out the survey and let us know what you’d like us to be working on. We’re looking for input as to whether we’re working on the right things, or is there something else that we could help the community be prepared in the event of another hurricane,” said Holzheimer at the February membership meeting of the Captiva Civic Association. “None of us want to see one, but we want to be sure that we’re prepared.”

Everyone who completes the survey at the committee’s Web site will be entered to win a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio in a drawing to be held at the seminar.

The hurricane committee formed after Hurricane Charley struck the island in 2004 and meets throughout the year to ensure preparation for potential storms and to improve communication before, during and after a storm.

Stephanie Dowd of the Sanibel Police Department will be attending the meeting to inform and sign up residents for 2009 hurricane hang tags.

If the hang tags are not available by the time of the program, Dowd will take residents’ information for future distribution.

Additional information and materials, like 2009 home owner authorization letters, are available on the hurricane committees Web site, www.mycaptiva.info .

People who are interested in becoming a part of the Captiva SSI team should contact the Captiva Island Fire Control District at 472-9494 for details. An SSI training session will take place on Saturday, March 28 at 9 a.m. at the Fire Department.

The educational program is open to the public and free of charge.
