Beach tilling to begin Friday

By Staff | Feb 26, 2009

Beginning this Friday, Feb. 27, sea turtles will have an improved nesting habitat.

The Captiva Erosion Prevention District is having the beach tilled to loosen the sand in preparation for turtle nesting season. Tilling alleviates excessive sand compaction. The beach is tilled down 24 inches to loosen and aerate the sand. The soft sand provides a safe habitat for turtles to nest.

Turtle nesting season begins on May 1 and ends on Oct. 31.

Beach tilling is required by state and federal beach nourishment permit requirements. The contractor will begin work early in the day and estimates that the project will take six working days. Work will be suspended for the weekend to avoid beach goers. The contractor’s equipment is turbo diesel powered to reduce noise.
