2 Islands gallery to open on Captiva

By Staff | Jan 30, 2009

Captiva is going to be home to a new art gallery tentatively set to open on Sunday, Feb. 1 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

2 Islands Gallery, 5400 Plantation Road, will be set in a former retail store on the South Seas Island Resort, said new co-manager Susan Sadler.

Though the gallery will be on South Seas property, it will be open to the public, Sadler said. It is expected to be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sadler, the vice president of the Tower Art Gallery, will manage the new art gallery with Thompson.

A variety of art mediums will be available for sale at the gallery, including paintings, photography, ceramics and jewelry.

Artists Clyde Butcher and Allan Maltz will be the anchors for the gallery,

Sadler said. Both artists are Florida landscape photographers.

Artists expect the gallery to be a shot in the arm for them in a rough economy.

“I think it’s going to give us a little boost,” said collage artist Lalita

Cofer. “I think Captiva will offer a different venue for sure.”

Sadler said she was approached several months ago by South Seas management about creating an art gallery on Captiva. Sadler said South Seas wanted to capture the warm feel of the popular Tower Gallery art cooperative on Sanibel.

The gallery will also hold a variety of art classes including, painting and fiber arts. There will also be children’s art classes.

The atmosphere at 2 Islands Gallery will be friendly and open, Sadler said.

“It’s a go-to place for Captiva and Sanibel residents,” she said.

The gallery will have a grand opening on Feb. 27. Clyde Butcher and Allan Maltz will be attending the grand opening. South Seas will be providing libations and hors d’oevres, said Thompson.
