Carol Ray Berninger

Carol Ray Berninger died on Dec. 30, 2008 at home in Short Hills, N.J. She was 79.

Born in Newton, Mass. on May 16, 1929 to Carlon Weston Ray and Anna Urban Ray, she graduated from Wellesley College in 1950 with a B.A. in English and received a Ph.D. from Drew University in 1993 in 19th Century Studies.

Before marriage, she was a writer and Assistant Editor at Look Magazine.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Edward Berninger, two daughters, Rev. Caroline Berninger (Mrs. Vahe Keukjian) of Stone Ridge, N.Y., Nan Berninger of Glendale, Calif., two grandchildren, Emmanuel and Elizabeth Keukjian, and a sister, Nancy Ray Pawel, of San Antonio, Tex.

She was a member of Community Congregational Church in Short Hills and had volunteered as a docent at Vizcaya in Miami, Fla. and the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum in Sanibel.

The Berninger family has vacationed and lived on Sanibel since 1964. They had a condominium at Sanibel Moorings from 1973 to 1984, and houses in Gulf Shores from 1986 to 2004.

Relatives and friends are invited to a brief Internment Service at Community Congregational Church in Short Hills, N.J. on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception for family and friends.
