Firefighter critical after Cape rollover

By Staff | Nov 29, 2008

A Cape Coral firefighter remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday from injuries suffered in a single-vehicle crash last week.
Robert Souza, 53, of Cape Coral, is in critical condition at the Lee Memorial Hospital, according to a hospital spokesperson.
An accident report states that Souza’s 2008 Ford truck was southbound when it left the roadway at 2573 Surfside Boulevard for unknown reasons, striking a parked vehicle and overturning several times in an empty lot Nov. 20 at about 7:10 p.m.
Souza is a firefighter with the Cape Coral Fire Department, but was likely not on duty at the time of the crash because he was driving a commercial vehicle, said city spokesperson Connie Barron.
Souza was ejected from the truck during the crash, and was the single occupant, according to the accident report.
He suffered incapacitating injuries from the accident, the report states.
Members of City Council mentioned Souza in opening prayers and final comments during a recent Council meeting, Barron said.
