Twenty-five illegal immigrants working on the construction of the new Lee County Detention Center on Ortiz Boulevard in Fort Myers were arrested Thursday, authorities said.

Lee County detectives were tipped off that the workers were not legal residents on Wednesday, and notified Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, according to Lee County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson John Sheehan.

Sheehan said 22 males and three females from Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala and Peru were arrested in the early morning hours Thursday and transported to an ICE regional office.

All 25 individuals will remain in custody until their removal proceedings.

The incident is still under investigation and no further information was available Thursday night, authorities said.
