Sanibel Fire and Rescue District gives nod to tentative budget

The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District held its first budget hearing last week and the board of commissioners unanimously supported the document.

Sanibel Fire Rescue District Fire Chief Matt Scott said Commissioner Bruce Cochrane and Commissioner Richard McCurry were present during the meeting and Commissioner Jerry Muench was excused. There were no members of the public who attended, he added.

The tentative millage rate remained the same, 1.1089 mills, which exceeds the rolled-back rate of 1.0969 mills.

"We did not go to the roll back rate. We stayed at the same millage rate," Scott said.

One mill is equal to $1 for every $1,000 of assessed taxable valuation. The rollback rate is the rate at which the same amount of revenue will be generated from properties within the taxing jurisdiction.

Scott said they went from a total revenue of $5,938,000 to $6,026,000, a slight increase in the budget. The total budget, which includes reserves, for the fiscal year 2019-2020 is $8,209.206.

"We have no intentions on making any changes. The board accepted what we presented and they were happy with it and ready to move forward with it," he said.

The final budget hearing will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 5:01 p.m., following the 4 p.m. Commission Meeting. The meetings will be held at the Sanibel Fire and Rescue District, Station 171, 2351 Palm Ridge Road.
