Sanibel library's summer reading is out of this world

The Sanibel Public Library's annual summer reading program continues to rocket forward.

"A Universe of Stories" commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing when astronauts first set foot on the moon in 1969. Children, from babies-to-teens, are invited to register to take part.

"We have a variety of new nonfiction middle grades books about the universe and space robotics from World Books," Youth Services Librarian Deanna Evans said.

Youths have been learning about space this summer through a variety of professionally-presented programs at the library, as well as through matinee movies and virtual reality experiences.

As in years past, participants can read to earn books for their home library and for patients at the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. The Sanibel Public Library Foundation matches each book earned with a book for the hospital. Youths can log hours and activities through Aug. 3.

Their earned books can be claimed until Aug. 10.

So far, 293 children have logged 106,844 minutes of reading this summer. Since the program's inception in 2012, participants have helped to contribute over 8,000 books to the hospital.

The foundation, along with the Joan Hunt Cory Children's Fund, underwrites the program. The Children's Fund was established in 2008 to honor Cory, a longtime library volunteer and supporter.

Come play in the Think Tank on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in August. The MagixBox projects interactive images from the ceiling to the floor. Squish mosquitoes, crush eggs or make a trail of stars. Playing with the MagixBox teaches youths to use modern technology and to cooperate with others.
