Registration still open for summer reading at the Sanibel library

By Staff | Jul 17, 2019

There is still time for families to sign up for the Sanibel Public Library’s annual program.

Children, from babies-to-teens, are invited to register for the summer reading program. Participants will receive a special gift; quantities are limited. The “A Universe of Stories” theme marks the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission, when astronauts first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969.

As in years past, participants will read to earn books for their home library and for patients at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The Sanibel Public Library Foundation matches each book earned with a book for the hospital. Youths can log hours and activities through Aug. 3.

The foundation, along with the Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund, underwrites the program. The Children’s Fund was established in 2008 to honor Cory, a longtime library volunteer and supporter.

At 1 p.m. July 22, stop by to enjoy the family-friendly movie “Captain Marvel.”

Come play in the library’s Think Tank on Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The MagixBox projects interactive images from the ceiling to the floor. Squish mosquitoes, crush eggs or make a trail of stars.

The library also is hosting the following weekly programs for youth:

– Family Storytime: Wednesdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. For young readers and their caregivers, the program helps develop pre-reading skills through songs and stories.

– V.I.P. After-Hours for Teens: Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Sixth- to 12-graders are invited to come hang out and munch on snacks.

– Monday Movie Matinee: Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. Get out of the heat, relax and enjoy a family-friendly movie.

– Reading to Bessie: Rain-free Tuesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. Have fun reading to Bessie, a bearded collie and Reading Education Assistance Dog. Participants can sign up on the spot.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
