The Sanibel Public Library recently announced its upcoming programs for adults and youth.

Join Youth Services Librarian Deanna Evans for stories and a snack on July 9 at 3 p.m. with "Stories and Slime." Make "galaxy slime" with glue, baking soda, and contact solution. Program is for elementary school-aged children.

On July 5, experiment with the HTC Vive VR System and Oculus Go headset from 10 a.m. to noon. Participation is first come, first served. Experiences open to ages 10 and older.

Stop by the display case near the Book Sale Room to see Ed Sieber's medals and militaria, including the Silver Star and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. Sieber is a Navy veteran "Helldiver" pilot who lives on Sanibel.

The library will be closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

Children, from babies-to-teens, are invited to register for the summer reading program. Participants will receive a special gift; quantities are limited. The "A Universe of Stories" theme marks the 50th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 11 mission, when astronauts first set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969.

The library hosts the following weekly programs for youth:

- Family Storytime: Wednesdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. For young readers and their caregivers, the program helps develop pre-reading skills through songs and stories.

- V.I.P. After-Hours for Teens: Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Sixth- to 12-graders are invited to come hang out and munch on snacks.

- Monday Movie Matinee: Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. Get out of the heat, relax and enjoy a family-friendly movie.

- Reading to Bessie: Rain-free Tuesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. Have fun reading to Bessie, a bearded collie and Reading Education Assistance Dog. Participants can sign up on the spot.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
