F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva will assemble Easter food and bunny baskets for those in the community needing a hand up during the holiday.

The dinner basket for families contains everything needed for a healthy, festive holiday dinner. F.I.S.H. will also assemble Easter Bunny baskets for youth filled with candy, small toys and school supplies.

"Holiday basket recipients are those that are known to us through usage of other programs, such as the food pantry and emergency financial assistance," Walk-In Center Manager Maria Espinoza, who coordinates the program, said in a prepared statement.

Officials reported that demand for the holiday baskets has increased this year as island neighbors continue to recoup from lost wages and jobs from the summer red tide months, as well as a slower than expected start to the islands' "season."

F.I.S.H. will provide approximately 80 Easter dinner baskets and 50 bunny baskets this year. Donations for the food baskets come from a variety of sources, as well as from its annual holiday food campaign.

"Food is picked up and baskets are assembled by our volunteers, who make every effort to ensure the holiday is a special one for our neighbors," Espinoza said. "I want to thank all the volunteers who go out and get the food and help us on the day of distribution."

Distribution will occur on April 17-18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walk-In Center.

To donate items for the Easter Food and Bunny Basket Program, contact Maria Espinoza or Social Services Assistant Anthony Morales at 239-472-4775.

The F.I.S.H. Walk-In Center is at 2430 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
