The Captiva Civic Association is preparing to host one of the island's long-standing traditions.

The annual Captiva Community Potluck Supper will take place on Jan. 31 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Captiva Civic Center. Free and open to the community, the CCA will provide the main course of turkey breast and ham, along with rolls. Attendees are asked to bring a salad, side dish, casserole or dessert.

"We're providing the main entree," CCA Executive Director Paul Garvey said.

In order to prepare enough food, those planning to attend are asked to provide advance notice.

President Lisa Riordan explained that the event goes back decades.

"This is a long tradition in the Captiva Civic Association," she said. "They used to have a series of potluck dinners, but now we have an annual one in January."

Free and open to the community

Riordan described it as a chance for the community to come together and bring a dish.

"To get together and catch up with each other, to converse and visit with neighbors," she said.

Prior potlucks have been themed. Last year it was "chili" because of the cold weather.

"This year we're doing just a traditional type of meal," Riordan said.

A donation bar with refreshments will be available.

"We ask people to make a donation for their drinks, and that money goes to the Captiva Civic Association," she said.

Last year's potluck drew 80 to 100 people.

"It's pretty much the same turnout each year," Riordan said.

Carpooling or alternative modes of transportation, such as taking a golf cart or bicycling, is recommended for attendees due to the limited amount of parking available at the center.

"We are limited with the parking spaces," she said.

The community is welcome to come out for some food and camaraderie.

"To spend time visiting with your friends and neighbors from the community," Riordan said.

"Captiva is a very community-minded little island," she added. "This is something that we've done for years and years and years, and we just want to continue that tradition."
