Caloosahatchee pollution

October 3, 2018
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the editor:

As we read it, the facts are as follows:

- Lake Okeechobee and its tributaries are hopelessly polluted, and

- There is a water-cleansing facility south of Lake Okeechobee, operated by public funds, but

- U.S. Sugar runoff already uses the full capacity of that facility, therefore

- Polluted water from Lake Okeechobee is flushed down the Caloosahatchee to avoid overfilling Lake Okeechobee!

- To stop this, an additional cleaning facility is needed, with an outlet to the south, but

- There is now no plan and timetable to construct that facility and outlet, and

- No branch of state or federal government, or prospective candidate, is taking any action to get that done!

- Who will do that job?
