Rotary Happenings: San-Cap Rotary Club Trust Fund revises process for community grants

Each year, the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club through its Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Trust Fund provides grants to local non-profit organizations as part of its community grants program. Last year, our club awarded nearly $50,000 in community grant funding and $50,000 in global grants. The majority of it is provided by fund-raising events, primarily our major annual fundraiser - the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Arts and Crafts Fair - in February.

At last week's club assembly, trust fund Board Member and Secretary Dorrie Hipschman announced a new grant process. The trust fund has revised its grant process in order to provide the best resources for our community and to better serve it and others.

In addition, Rotary Scholarship Committee Co-chair Lee Almas announced that the club will award college scholarship this year in the amount of $10,000. Details of the awards will be announced soon.

The following information has been sent to island non-profits in letter form and can be found online at sanibelrotary.org, under the link "Charitable Grants." Review the document carefully as it will help you to prepare a successful application.

Schedule/timing

Rotary's fiscal year is July 1 to June 30. Each non-profit may receive funding only once each year. However, to ensure a fast and fair response to need, we will now have two application opportunities each year. In future years, grants applications will be due on Aug. 1 and on March 1 each year. (Note: This year, the first applications will be due on Sept. 20.)

Grant awards will be distributed at a club meeting in October and June.

Amount requested

Typical Rotary grants range from $500 to $2,500.

Grant requirements

Grants are not limited to tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations.

Attachments may be JPGs, Word or Excel documents, or PDFs. A written progress report must be provided within 6-12 months of funding indicating how the funds were spent and how successful you were in achieving the desired outcome. If you do not submit a progress report within 6-12 months, your organization will not be considered for funding in the next year. Follow-up report forms can be found on the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club website. Grant consideration is based on the following: making a substantial difference in the quality of our community life; facilitates collaboration and helps build partnerships between organizations, local government or public institutions to create positive change; and helps build their capacity to become more effective in our community. Grant applications must be sponsored by a Rotary member.
