Earlier this month, Sundial Resort & Spa opened its new 12-court pickleball facility, which is accessible to both resort guests and the public.

"This is the biggest (pickleball) facility in Lee County," said Sean Warren, tennis and pickleball program coordinator at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa.

To celebrate the new courts, a ribbon cutting will be held Wednesday, May 3, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the new pickleball facility across the street from Sundial. Pickleball Magazine and USAPA Nationals and US Open Medalist Rob Davidson will be in attendance.

Ernesto Enriquez-Socas, Sundial's IPTPA certified pro, will give demos to the public during the ribbon cutting. The resort will even have some pickleball equipment on-hand incase any attendees want to try it. Refreshments will be served.

Donna Brown, marketing manager at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa, said the decision to install the courts stemmed from pickleball's growing popularity.

"We recognized that pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, it's really a craze. In the past, it's something that appealed more to the older demographics but it seems to be really picking up steam with the younger folks as well," Brown said. "We thought pickleball would be a great fit and it's something that we can offer to our guests as an amenity and to the community."

Pickleball is a combination of badminton, tennis and ping pong. The sport is more focused on placement rather than strength, making it suitable for all ages.

The courts, which feature a Plexicushion system, are open from 8 a.m. to dusk, seven days a week. Resort guests can access the facility and equipment free of charge. Pickleball fees for the public are $10 for two hours of play. Complimentary rental equipment is included.

Lessons, clinics and open play will be spear-headed by Enriquez-Socas. Lessons are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are available on certain weekends, too. A one-hour private lesson is $60, a semi-private lesson for one-hour with two people is $45 each and a one-hour clinic is $25. During the clinic, 3-6 people participate in games, drills and exercises.

In addition to lessons, introductory annual memberships are being offered to the public for a limited time for $150. The annual memberships include unlimited play and discounts on lessons and clinics. For more information on the memberships, contact Sean Warren at (239) 395-6037 or email him at sean.warren@sundialresort.com.

To celebrate the grand opening of the courts, Pickleball Magazine will host an exclusive pickleball summer camp for adults. The camp includes 15 hours of instruction, video analysis, unlimited court use, a three-night stay at Sundial, breakfast and lunch daily and free off-court activities. The cost is $990 per person double occupancy or $1,200 for singles. The summer camp takes place May 3-5, 6-8, 10-12 and 13-15. To reserve a spot, call (413) 833-8805.

"We have a lot of couples signing up," Brown said.

For the kids, a sports-related summer camp will be offered from June to August. The camp will be headed by Christian Clark, USPTA elite pro and will target kids ages 6-14. Kids will have the opportunity to play pickleball, tennis, volleyball and go swimming. The summer camp takes place Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $40 per day, lunch is included.

"Discounts will be offered for those who have siblings or sign up for the entire week. We'll have some promotional things for that," Clark said.

For more information on the summer camp, call (239) 395-6037.

In the future, Sundial plans on hosting tournaments and getting a league together that will be open to all Lee County residents. For more information on pickleball at Sundial, contact pickleball@sundialresort.com or call (239) 395-6037.
