BIG ARTS to screen ‘Most Likely to Succeed’ film
Prepare yourself to never view the school system the same way again. On Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m., BIG ARTS will show the film “Most Likely to Succeed” which illustrates how school could be.
The film was originally shown at Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and won several awards. Arlene Dillion, BIG ARTS Board Member is hoping the movie will strike conversation among residents on the island.
“I wanted to bring a conversation to our island about what 21st century education is. What this movie is trying to do is trying to start a conversation, it’s trying to plant a seed. So in order to do that, they are asking people to have showings and conversations. If you put it on Netflix, it becomes everyone isolated in their living room watching the film on their computer. They (the producers) wanted this to be a group experience so that the people watching the movie might actually talk about it,” Dillion said.
The film zeroes in on a school in San Diego, CA., that is rethinking what the experience of going to school looks like. The film challenges changing the blue collar education system that was set into place 125 years ago and bringing in more engaging projects that will actually help kids out in the real world.
“This film is for all of us, whether you’re two or 100, Dillion said. We need to be conscious of how we’re educating our kids.”
Before the film, there will be a meet and greet with Chuck Vilardi, the Sanibel School’s new principal. After the movie, there will be a Q&A to get conversation flowing. Complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided as well.
“The movies runs for an hour and a half. It will end at about 8:30 p.m. and we’ll have about a 30 minute discussion. People can stay or they can leave, we understand it’s a school night. For those who can stay we just want to have a positive, forward thinking discussion.” Dillion said.
The film will be shown in Schein Hall at BIG ARTS located at 900 Dunlop Road. Tickets are available for $10 at the door or online for $13.50 (service fees apply online.) Tickets can also be purchased by calling (239) 395-0900. For more information, go to bigarts.org.
