Studio to hold Olympic-themed dance contest

By Staff | Jun 22, 2016

An Olympic-themed dance contest will take place this weekend at a Cape Coral dance studio.

USA Dance’s Chapter 6049 will host the contest and more on Saturday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rhythm in Motion Dance Studio. Admission is $10 for USA Dance members or $15 for non-members.

“The 2016 Olympics is in Rio de Janeiro, and USA Dance is going to the Olympics,” Carol Davis, vice president of the Cape operations for Chapter 6049, said. “So, we are doing some dance contests.”

Contests will be held for the tango, rumba, foxtrot, swing and cha-cha.

“There’s like five basic dances that people know,” she said.

There will be additional contests, like a Jack and Jill competition. Davis explained that in the Jack and Jill format, participants draw numbers to determine who their dance partner will be for the contest.

She noted that it is a chance for dancers of all skill levels to show off what they know.

“It’s sharing dance styles from different areas and studios,” Davis said.

A panel of judges, many of them owners of local dance studios, will decide on the winners.

“We’re hoping to have a couple of judges,” she said.

Prizes will be awarded, including gift certificates for free dance classes and such.

Attendees will have an opportunity to take part in a free, 30-minute dance class on samba.

“Samba is the dance of the country of Rio de Janeiro,” Davis said.

Rhythm in Motion co-owners Greg Kurth and Michaela Poole will also teach some dance moves.

“If you’re a beginner or just like to get out and dance, this is the place to come to,” she said.

Olympic-themed food and refreshments will be available.

“Many of us are seniors, and this is a great way to exercise and also utilize our brains,” Davis said of ballroom dancing, adding that there is also the social aspect that can make it an appealing activity.

“This is a way for people to meet people,” she said.

The public is encouraged to stop by and check it out this weekend.
