Healthy Heart Month to give a bevy of exercise options at Sanibel Rec Center

By Staff | Feb 3, 2015

The health of one’s heart will be the focus at the Sanibel Rec Center with its Healthy Heart Month coming in February.

Everyday of the month will have an activity schedule members can take part in, all in the name of making one’s body and heart healthier.

“We are offering screenings through the month and are planning new activities for people to try,” said Director of Recreation Andrea Miller. “We want to offer a versatile amount of activities so people can try each one and see if it’s a good fit for them.”

For those who always wanted to try running or walking for fitness, Thursday, Feb. 5, will be a Intro to Walker/Running from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Boot Camps will be held every Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m. for the more hard-core fitness activities.

Biking the Refuge will be held during the week of Feb. 9-12 and again on Feb. 25-26, while a Beach Walk is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, at 9:30 a.m. starting at Gulfside Park.

This is just a little sampling of all the activities which are planned for the month of February.

Screenings throughout the month include blood pressure (Feb. 2), Mobile Mammo (Feb. 17) and complimentary diabetes, glaucoma, hearing and blood pressure screenings (Feb. 23).

For those hoopsters, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22.

Cross-fitness will also be held on the Sundays of Feb. 8 and Feb. 22.

“It will be a good sampler month for people,” Miller said. “It’s a chance to try many different activities.”

There also will be a punch card given out to members and they can get it punched for each events, with prizes earned throughout the month.
