Landscape work beautifies CHR rental unit

The tenants at Casa Mariposa are enjoying a cleaner, neater and more scenic landscape thanks to volunteer work by Blades Earth Care of Sanibel.

The Community Housing & Resource (CHR) rental property has undergone a thorough beautification project in recent weeks that included trimming, cleaning, raking, planting and removal of invasive plants. Through the generosity of Blades Earth Care and Hickory Hammock Native Tree Farm in Alva, the tenants can enjoy a butterfly garden in the property's rear courtyard.

"It's our pleasure to be able to give back to the community in this way," said Blades Earth Care owner Jim Ballinger. "The tenants were so appreciative of our work to clean up the front garden that it inspired us to do a bit more."

The rear courtyard is a 30-by-90-foot space that had become severely overgrown. Blades employees Alex Roman and Taylor Maze trimmed palms, weeds, shrubs and removed invasive plants. Terry Sanders of Hickory Hammock donated the necessary plants to create the butterfly garden.

"We are so grateful for all the work donated by Jim and his team at Blades Earth Care," said CHR executive director Kelly Collini. "The tenants at Casa Mariposa were thrilled with the landscape work and the new butterfly garden."

CHR relies on the generosity of volunteers, as do most nonprofit organizations, to maintain its properties and save its limited funding.

CHR is partially funded through a contract with the city of Sanibel to provide affordable housing to families and individuals who work or serve the community of Sanibel. Currently, 150 people occupy 10 CHR rental properties and 14 limited equity ownership homes spread out over the island.
