Sanibel Vice-Mayor Mick Denham has been appointed to represent Southwest Florida on the Policy Board of the Florida Regional Councils Association (FRCA).

Denham is attending his first FRCA meeting today in Tallahassee.

FRCA is the statewide organization comprised of all 11 of the state's Regional Planning Councils (RPC), including Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council. Denham has sat on the SWF RPC for eight years.

"I have a reputation as a good negotiator, so I was asked if I would like to serve on the FRCA Policy Board representing this area," said Denham. "The Governor reduced the funding to area planning councils, so that's one thing I hope we can get back."

State funding enables local planning councils to function as overseer of major developments in their area - primarily commercial, high rises or shopping centers - to make sure the development is appropriate for the area.

"There are a number of things important to Sanibel, especially environmental issues, that come through FRCA," said Denham. "The fertilizer ordinance fight started in the planning council. Stormwater and sanitary sewer projects are other issues discussed by planning councils."

FRCA's policy board consists of two elected officials and one Governor's appointee from each of the 11 Regional Planning Councils. It meets twice a year to discuss issues and shares information with its partners and to set a legislative agenda.

Denham was elected to Sanibel's City Council in 2005 and has worked tirelessly to represent the islands and the region on a number of governing boards. In addition to being on the Southwest Florida RPC, he serves as Council's liaison to the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce government affairs committee; the Regional Watersheds Committee; is a voting delegate to the Florida League of Cities and serves on the league's Energy and Environmental Quality Legislative Policy Committee.

On Sanibel Denham also is an alternate Council liaison to the General Employees' Pension Board of Trustees, the Police Officers' Pension Board of Trustees and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).
