Island properties earn prestigious designations

September 21, 2012
Special to the Reporter (sancapnews@breezenewspapers.com) , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Representatives of the Florida Superior Small Lodging Association (SSL) recently named 21 hoteliers in Lee County as having successfully qualified for the distinguished SSL certification. Ten of those properties are located on Sanibel and Captiva.

In addition, 14 of the 21 SSL properties inspected by the Property Review Program (PRP) qualified to receive the coveted White Glove Award for best practices in housekeeping. Properties must receive a score of 100 percent for all components of the housekeeping inspection to be eligible to receive the White Glove Award.

White Glove Award winners on the islands include Anchor Inn & Cottages; Blue Dolphin; Gulf Breeze Cottages; Mitchell's San Castles; The Palm View; Shalimar Resort; and Waterside Inn on the Beach. Sanpiper Inn, Signal Inn and Tropical Winds Motel & Cottages also achieved certification.

Eligibility for participation in the Lee County SSL program is restricted to accommodations with 50 room units or less. Properties must hold a valid hotel, motel, inn or bed and breakfast license and pay all applicable state and local taxes related to the operations of an accommodation.

The inspection and designation program is designed to provide travelers with an easily identifiable symbol to demonstrate that the accommodation is a "clean, safe and well managed small lodging establishment, offering friendly ambiance and personal service."

All property review inspections are conducted unannounced and can be repeated periodically and randomly to ensure that SSL program standards are being maintained.

The passing grade for participation in the program is 82 percent and is based on a comprehensive review process of six different property attributes: registration/operations/public places, guest accommodations, bathrooms, bathroom supplies, kitchens, and property exterior.

Other Lee County properties recognized by the hospitality recognition program are:

Bokeelia, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Matlacha and St. James City - Bokeelia Tarpon Inn ; Legacy Harbour Hotel & Suites; Tarpon Lodge; and Two Fish Inn earning White Glove Awards; Bridgewater Inn and

Casa Loma as certified.

Fort Myers Beach - Beach Shell Inn; Harbour House at the Inn; and Silver Sands Villas earning White Glove Awards; Manatee Bay Inn Bed & Breakfast and Matanzas Inn as certified.
