By Staff | Oct 28, 2011

"There's a Secret on Sanibel, and Captiva too!" was written by Sanibel resident Karen Richards, who will be signing copies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Sanibel Island Book Shop, located next to Traders restaurant on Periwinkle Way.

Sanibel resident and author Karen Richards will host her very first book signing for her second children’s book “There’s a Secret on Sanibel, and Captiva too!” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Sanibel Island Book Shop, located next to Traders on Periwinkle Way.

“I expect 10,000 people to show up and we have to quickly order more books,” Richards said jokingly. “I really am looking forward to it because it’s fun to talk about what I love — Sanibel and animals, which are what the book is about.”

This wildlife extravaganza tells the true story of life on sanctuary islands, Sanibel and Captiva, in Southwest Florida. Long a tourist destination, the islands provide far more than the best shelling in the country and magnificent sunsets.

Everything on the islands is geared toward the safety and well-being of wildlife from herons to egrets to alligators, sea turtles and snow plovers. They even have their own hospital.

“There’s a Secret on Sanibel, and Captiva too!” contains engaging poems, whimsical wildlife illustrations by Bruce Keil and a dot-to-dot coloring section that will engage children of all ages.

Discover the wonders of life on the islands, where islanders and wildlife live in harmony. Find out the ‘secret’ wildlife shares in this story of what islanders do to protect them and help them thrive.

Richards also authored “Lovey, the Piano Cat,” a true story based on a time in Kansas when she was a piano teacher and her son, then 6 years old, and a bedraggled cat befriended one another after months of cajoling and patience. Lovey’s innate ability to eventually help some of Richards’ piano students overcome their fears led her to write this adventure.

The author will also host a book signing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Island Book Nook, 2330 Palm Ridge Road, for “There’s a Secret on Sanibel, and Captiva too!”
