The Academy at Shell Point invites the public to attend three thought-provoking presentations by Tom Eastwood - a consultant, lecturer and "edu-tainer" - beginning next week.

Eastwood's lecture on "U.S. Intelligence Contemporary Issues" will take place on Thursday, Sept. 8 starting at 1 p.m. His presentation on "Military Tribunals" will be offered at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9. His lecture on "The CIA and Military Terrorist Detention Programs" will take place on Monday, Sept. 12.

All three events will be held in the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands in Shell Point Retirement Community. Space is very limited, so tickets are required to attend. They can be purchased for $10 each by calling 239-454-2054.

"The last decade has seen many changes in our security and the economy due to the tragic acts which occurred on Sept. 11, 2001," said Teri Kollath, manager of Academy and Volunteer Services. "Many people are concerned about the safety of our nation, should future attacks ever be attempted. We are honored to have Mr. Eastman speak on our campus and offer some additional insight."

Eastwood began his career with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms before transferring to the Department of Defense. His career also included conducting and leading counterintelligence and criminal investigations, and he has also served as a senior executive for the IRS.

In this frank and open discussion which moves beyond the rhetoric, political hyperbole and media hype, Eastwood will discuss why our intelligence failed us on 9/11 and the state of our current preparation. He will also cover the use of torture in the war on terror, terrorist surveillance, and why it took us so long to kill Osama.

"Since 9/11, Americans have closely watched the topics surrounding terrorists and the nation's security," added Kollath. "Mr. Eastman will discuss the various detention programs and locations, and how they treat their detainees, while also reviewing how these programs play a role in helping to prevent any future attacks on our country."

Eastwood will also discuss the treatment of terrorists held by the CIA and the U.S. military that have received so much media coverage. This course discusses enhanced interrogation, secret overseas detention sites, Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib.

The Academy at Shell Point is a lifelong learning educational initiative for the residents of the retirement community. The Academy provides anywhere from 70 to 90 classes each semester, that encompasses a well-rounded curriculum of educational opportunities for senior adults.
