Scot Congress, proprietor of Congress Jewelers on Sanibel, recently met with legislators in Washington, D.C. Congress met with U.S. Rep. Connie Mack and other legislators to ask for their support on issues that impact jewelers and their stores.

Congress was part of a delegation from Jewelers of America, the national trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry retail marketplace, and JAPAC, the association’s political action committee.

“With so many changes on Capitol Hill that can impact jewelers and other small businesses, it’s critical for individual business owners to speak out,” said JA President and CEO Matthew Runci. “I applaud the efforts of Scot Congress and other JAPAC board members who took the time to let legislators know that the decisions they make in Washington have consequences for Main Street retailers and consumers who buy their products.”

Jewelers of America works to improve consumer confidence in the jewelry industry. The website for its consumer education arm, Jewelry Information Center, is an online source for fine jewelry and watch information, trends and shopping tips. Visit www.jewelers.org and www.JIC.org for more information.

Congress, who serves on the board of directors for JA and JAPAC, has owned and operated jewelry stores in Southwest Florida since 1983. Congress Jewelers, in its original Periwinkle Place location, specializes in an exclusive selection of elegant diamonds, colored gemstones, fine designer jewelry, Rolex timepieces and the Sealife by Congress collection, including the original Sanibel sandals. Its experienced staff offers watch service and repairs, jewelry design, production and repairs, appraisals and estate buying.

Congress Jewelers was named one of the nation’s top 50 designer-jewelry retailers for 2010/2011 during the fifth annual JCK Designer Retailer Awards and is a member of the American Gemological Society, which includes less than five percent of jewelers in North America.
