American Legion features meals

Besides our daily menu, back by popular demand, we will be serving home cooked meals again.Tuesdays we will have baked chicken, Wednesdays, pork and kraut over mashed potatoes and on Thursdays we will be having homemade meatloaf dinner. We are the only place on the islands that have a pool table (2). Stop by for a game or two. Our monthly BBQ's are the 2nd and Last Sundays of the month. Saturdays and Sundays we will have homemade spaghetti served with a dinner salad. We open Monday - Saturday at 11 a.m. and at noon on Sundays. Music with our very own Robby Hutto and his band will be on Wednesday nights and BBQ Sundays at 7 p.m. We are located at mile marker #3 on San-Cap Road. Submitted by a Lion, Bob Since the Lions‚ International Convention in 1925, when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become The Knights of the Blind, Lions‚ Clubs around the world have been working to meet that challenge through several important programs. One of those programs is „Recycle for Sight‰ which matches your donated eyeglasses (prescription and non-prescription) to needy people worldwide. In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month‚s wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people. Look around your home in dresser drawers and closets, in your workplace and in your car‚s console or glove compartment, you may find you have old glasses, outdated prescription glasses, reading or sunglasses. Even if they are in need of repair, they all can help someone to be able to see better. Just since 1990, the Lions vision programs have prevented severe vision loss or restored sight to 27 million people, that‚s more than the combined populations of New York and Tokyo. The generosity of the local businesses to be collection points for our program is greatly appreciated and we urge you to patronize them. Look for the Lions Recycle for Sight collection boxes at the following locations: Bailey‚s General Store, Jerry‚s Foods, Bank of the Islands, Snead Cataract/Eye Physicians, Island Pharmacy, the Island Seniors Center, the Sanibel Library, the Sanibel Post Office and Periwinkle Park. There is also a collection box at South Seas Resort on Captiva. The Lions would like to express our appreciation for contributing to the project's success by serving as convenient drop-off centers. Library features summer reading program

The Sanibel public library is holding "The Great Pizza Contest" live show on Tuesday, July 21. The library is welcoming page Turner Adventures in a presentation of Riley Roam's book "The Great Pizza Contest". The event will start at 3 p.m. in meeting room #4 of the library. Children of all ages are welcome.

Noah’s Ark to start summer hours May 1

Noah’s Ark Thrift Shop Summer hours begin May 1st until “Bag Day” August 14th. The hours will be Tuesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. The Ark will be closed for the remainder of August through September. They will reopen Friday, Oct. 2 and continue their summer hours (Tuesday and Friday 9:30-12:30) through the end of October. Noah's Ark is located to the rear of the church at 2304 Periwinkle Way. Ample free parking is available on the church property.

SCCF teaches human uses of native plants

Did you know that Henry Ford stuffed the seats of his cars with the air plant, Spanish moss, or that Thomas Edison used the giant native Seaside Goldenrod for electrical conductivity experiments? Calusa fishermen of the past used the poisonous saponins in certain native plants to harvest their fish. Stories like these are now being told at the ethno botany garden at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF). Observe palm frond baskets and Spanish moss rope being made every Tuesday at 10 a.m. and learn more about the human uses of Florida’s native plants. Cost is $3 per adult with SCCF members and children free. SCCF is located at 3333 San-Cap Rd.

Youth programs at library

"Be Creative at Your Library" is the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for Pre-K – 5th Graders. The theme for teens and ‘tweens this summer is "Express Yourself at Your Library". The program is for ages sixth-Grade and older. The Library will have special VIP hours for the program on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. The weekly Teen VIP Program will began on Tuesday, June 16th at 6 p.m. with an Open House Coffee Bar.
