Weight Loss Math

October 24, 2012 - Dr. Greg Walsh
In the state of Florida, one in four individuals suffers from obesity and many more are considered overweight. Obesity has become an epidemic that has crippled the quality of health for millions of Americans as well as shortening their lifespan. One of the best ways that individuals can manage their weight is to seek out accurate information on the amount of calories they are consuming.

I recommend using a website to help track the caloric value of your meals called If you want to find out how many calories a tablespoon of ketchup (15 calories) is bringing to your hamburger (334 calories), the information is readily available. The site will help guide you to developing a well balanced diet avoid neglecting any of the important vitamins and minerals that your body needs.

While many may shrug off a high body mass index as nothing more than a cosmetic problem, these individuals are neglecting several serious health risks. Obesity puts an individual at risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and strokes. As a chiropractor, I have found that obesity is a common culprit for joint pain because of the excess stress it places on your hips and spinal segments. If left untreated, these joints can become degenerative and may need medical intervention. I advise my patients to use because it is regulated by the USDA and it will not cost them a dime. I know they are getting the accurate information they need to take the path to better health.

Here are some of the more common dishes found on Sanibel and their caloric value:

Baked Mahi Mahi with Butter - 381 Calories

6 Medium Fried Shrimp - 196 Calories

1 Crab Cake Sauteed in Butter - 161 Calories

1 Cup of Clam Chowder - 151 Calories

6 Raw Oysters - 57 Calories

1 Florida Oranges - 62 Calories

Key Lime Pie (1 serving) - 190 Calories
